Overview & Background

The University of Texas at Austin has a state-of-the-art medical facility to educate the future of medicine. With the future intertwined with technology, it was only logical to invest in software to better educate these budding medical professionals. The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School required a custom-built web application that would provide students and educators with anatomically correct, interactive diagrams to visualize the actions of specific receptor types in the human body. This innovative tool is designed to enhance the learning experience for medical students and physicians by offering easy access to study material and helping users retain critical biological information.

The Challenge

The application demonstrates the interactions of the nervous system's receptors with chemical agents. The core challenge was to create an interactive diagram that allows users to visualize the effects of various agents, such as agonists and antagonists, on the body. This included both standalone and simultaneous visualizations across different organs. Nexrage Studios collaborated closely with Dell Medical School faculty to ensure the anatomical accuracy and biological correctness of the diagrams and functionality.

Our Solution

Key Features and Solutions include: Data Encryption & Security with SHA-256 encryption protecting all data within the application. Access Control with Roles and Permissions implementing RBAC to assign permissions to different user types, with educators and admin faculty having full control over content. Email authentication securely manages user access to the platform. Data Analytics for User Engagement tracks critical usage metrics like user counts, time spent on platform, and average time per session, visible to educators with administrative permissions.

Technical Implementation

Nexrage Studios adhered to W3C accessibility guidelines to ensure the platform was fully compliant with web accessibility standards, critical for providing an inclusive learning experience for all students, including those using assistive technologies. The application was hosted on Microsoft Azure, which allowed for real-time monitoring and scalability. Azure's autoscaling capabilities were employed to handle fluctuating traffic, automatically increasing resources as user numbers grew during peak periods. Azure also provided security alerts and monitoring systems.

Technical Details

The application was built with a flexible architecture, making it possible for the tool to be easily white-labeled for other universities. This design allows future clients to tailor the platform to fit their own branding and academic needs without disrupting the core functionality. To meet the University's aggressive timeline, Nexrage Studios employed React for the frontend and .NET Core 3.1 for the backend, ensuring a scalable, secure, and fast-performing web application. This architecture enabled the development team to deliver a fully functional, responsive platform within a 3-month timeline.

Results & Impact

By leveraging modern frameworks and collaborating closely with faculty members, Nexrage Studios delivered a high-quality, scalable learning tool that met the unique educational needs of Dell Medical School. The platform's ability to scale and adapt, while maintaining the highest standards of security and accessibility, showcases its potential for future use across other academic institutions. All activity reports are aggregated with no individual user data exposed, ensuring compliance with privacy standards.

Future Outlook

The UT Austin Dell Medical School Anatomical App provides students with an interactive and dynamic learning tool that enhances their understanding of complex biological interactions. With the support of Nexrage Studios, UT Austin now offers an educational platform that is secure, scalable, and accessible, designed to improve student engagement and academic performance. The white-label capability positions the platform for expansion to other universities.
